In 1993 he was awarded the Turners Gold Medal, presented by the Vice Chancellor of City University, for the design of the solar array deployment mechanism on the £1.4 billion Envisat satellite.

Professor Stuart Burgess has taught engineering design at Cambridge University and Bristol University.  In 1989, he received a Design Council Molins Prize presented by Peter Morrison, Minister of State for Trade and Industry.

The Origin & Purpose of the Stars

The big Universe raises some very big questions.  What is the origin of the stars?  What is the purpose of the stars?  In this talk Stuart gives evidence of design in the Universe, especially in the Earth and Solar System.  The talk describes the purpose of the stars, these include:

To give light on the Earth - For signs and seasons - For beauty - To reveal God’s glory - To reveal God’s mercy - To reveal God’s wisdom, power and to inspire awe in His people.

The Origin & Purpose of Beauty - Beauty in creation is one of the most important evidences for intelligent design.  There are many instances of added beauty in creation where features have no purpose other than that of creating beauty.  The lecture with pictures, animations and video clips gives two cases of added beauty, peacock feathers and bird song.  It also includes The definition of beauty - Detailed pictures of peacock feathers - Explanation of thin - film interference in the peacock feather - Critique of the theory of sexual selection - Video recording of blackbird duet - Explanation of beauty in bird song - Biblical explanation of beauty and describes how the beauty of creation reflects God’s goodness and kindness to man.

The Design and Origin of Man - Have humans descended from an ape-like creature by chance accident or was man specially created?  The truth about man’s origin is of great importance because it determines whether humans are accountable to a Creator God.  The lecture contains pictures and video clips of the human body to illustrate how wonderfully man is made and presents unique physical characteristics of humans such as Upright Stature, Skilful Hands, Fine Skin, Facial Expressions, Intricate Language, Unique Childhood, Unique Sexuality, Unique Brain, Unique Beauty and Unique Genome.  It also describes how humans have a soul which makes us  made in the image of God.

The Search for Extra Terrestrial Life - Prof. Stuart Burgess

The search for (ETL) is now considered to be one of the most important activities for mankind.  Space agencies spend billions of dollars every year in search for (ETL).  The talk describes - The reason for the rise in interest in (ETL) - The space missions being carried out- Messages being sent into space - What the Bible says about the existence of (ETL) - Bible teaching on the purpose of start and planets and a critique of science fiction.  The talk is illustrated with many case studies and pictures and the insight Professor Burgess has having worked  for the European Space Agency is used to back up the information.

The Design Argument - The talk illustrated with diagrams, animations and video clips, argues that design in the natural world reveals a designer.  In the same way that an aeroplane reveals a designer, so a bird reveals a designer.  The talk describes the challenges of engineering design to illustrate why design does not happen by chance.  The talk describes the following: How the design argument comes from the Bible - Why design needs intelligence - Example of intelligent design from spacecraft engineering - Explanation of irreducible complexity - Irreducible design in the knee joint, fish jaws and bird wings - Explanation of added beauty and over design.
